Parent Consultation and Positive Parenting Skills Coaching in Oregon and Washington
Dr. Justin Bush, PhD provides evidence-based parent consultation and positive parenting skills coaching for families across Oregon and Washington with children, teens, and young adults (ages 5–23). Whether you’re navigating defiance, anxiety, ADHD, school stress, mood challenges, or family conflict, parent coaching helps you build a calmer home, stronger connection, and clearer routines—without constant power struggles.
What parent coaching helps with
Parents commonly seek support for:
Daily behavior challenges (noncompliance, tantrums, arguing, backtalk)
ADHD/executive functioning (routines, follow-through, homework conflict)
Anxiety and emotional dysregulation (meltdowns, avoidance, reassurance cycles)
Teen communication (respect, boundaries, motivation, conflict)
Young adult transitions (independence, responsibility, family expectations)
Co-parenting alignment (consistent expectations across homes)
The skills you’ll build
In sessions, you’ll learn practical strategies you can use right away:
Positive reinforcement that works (increase desired behaviors and cooperation)
Clear expectations + consistent limits (structure without harshness)
Effective consequences (calm, predictable, teachable—not escalating)
Emotion coaching and validation (reduce defensiveness; build buy-in)
De-escalation tools (what to do in the moment when things are heated)
Communication that strengthens trust (listening, repair, and respect)
Emotional intelligence + resilience (core focus)
A key part of positive parenting skills coaching is strengthening emotional intelligence in both parents and kids. You’ll practice ways to recognize and validate emotions while also guiding your child or teen toward coping skills, flexibility, problem-solving, and resilience.
Family-involved when appropriate
When it fits your goals, children and teens may be included for skill practice and shared understanding. This helps families apply strategies together, improve cooperation, and build a foundation of mutual trust and respect.
What to expect (how it works)
Parent consultation is collaborative and goal-focused. We’ll clarify what’s happening, identify patterns that maintain conflict, and build a plan that matches your child’s developmental stage and your family values. Families across Oregon and Washington use parent coaching as:
a stand-alone service, or
alongside therapy for a child/teen/young adult

How parent coaching works
Parent consultation is coaching for the adults, not therapy for the child. You meet with Dr. Bush in 45-minute sessions by secure video, without needing to bring your child along. Sessions start with the specific moments that go wrong — mornings, homework, screens, bedtime, the argument that repeats every Sunday — and produce a plan you can actually run that week.
Between sessions you try the plan, track what happened, and bring the data back. Adjustments are made based on what your child actually did, not on what the strategy was supposed to do. Most parents notice the first change in the fight-to-cooperation ratio within a few weeks.
Why parent coaching often works faster than child therapy
Children and teens spend a handful of hours a month with a therapist and hundreds with their parents. When parents change how limits are set, how conflict is repaired, and how effort is noticed, the environment changes every day of the week. Behavioral parent training is one of the best-supported interventions in child psychology, particularly for ADHD and oppositional behavior in younger children — which is why it is often recommended before or alongside individual child and teen therapy.
Parent consultation for co-parents and blended families
Because sessions are held by video, co-parents in two households can join the same session from separate locations, which makes it far easier to agree on consistent expectations, routines, and consequences across homes. Where the wider family system is the issue, family therapy may be the better fit.
Parent coaching by telehealth across Oregon and Washington
Sessions are held on secure, HIPAA-compliant video for parents anywhere in Oregon or Washington. Dr. Bush is licensed in both states (Oregon License 2154, Washington License PY61540899). No commute, no childcare to arrange, and evening scheduling is easier than an office visit.
Frequently asked questions about parent consultation
Does my child need to attend?
Usually not. Parent consultation is designed to work with the parents alone. Children or teens are included only when a specific goal calls for it.
How is this different from therapy?
Parent coaching targets parenting strategy and the home environment. Therapy targets a person’s symptoms and skills. Many families do parent consultation first, then add therapy or psychological testing if a diagnostic question remains.
My child is 19 and still living at home. Is that too old?
No. Parent consultation covers ages 5 through 23, including young adults navigating independence, responsibility, and family expectations during the launch years.
Is parent consultation covered by insurance?
Coverage varies, since parent consultation is not always billed as a therapy service. Dr. Bush is in-network with Aetna, Lyra Health, Regence BlueCross BlueShield, First Health, and Reliant. See the rates and insurance page for current fees and superbill details.
